CSD Hosts 70 Teachers: Teaching with Technology in Cumberland is Cutting Edge

On Friday, April 20, the Cumberland School District hosted an Apple Learning Leadership Institute on  One-to-One Technology for over seventy professionals throughout the state of Wisconsin and Minnesota. Media Specialists, Principals, Superintendents, Technology Coordinators, Teachers and many more were in attendance.

Our superintendent, Mr. Barry Rose welcomed the visitors and gave a brief overview of how the Cumberland School District is using technology district wide before breaking up into groups to tour high school and middle school classrooms. In the high school, Mrs. Wendy Larson; Math, Mrs. Jessica Olson; Social Studies, and Mrs. Ann Ethen; English showed the visitors how students used their laptops in a classroom setting and how the teacher teaches using the technology that we have.

In the middle school, Mr. Joe Waite; Social Studies, Mr. Mike Dietrich; Math, and Mr. Bill McCreary; English, and Ms. Jen Snowbank library media specialist,  demonstrated how students used their iPads on a daily basis. After classroom visits, the group was bussed to the Isle Theatre, where each building principal and two staff members from the elementary, middle school and high school gave a building level technology integration presentation followed by a question and answer session.

Since the groups weren’t able to tour the elementary school, Mrs. Karen Mitchell and Mrs. Jamie Shaffer presented an iMovie at the theatre showing the technology that is used at the elementary level. Many great questions were asked and we received many wonderful compliments from visitors as far away as Racine, Wisconsin and Chaska, Minnesota. It was a very successful day for all. We look forward to sharing the technology that all of our students are using in our district with the community very soon.

PTA Winter Challenge

Once again the PTA is asking students to collect Box Tops, Milk Points, and Labels in a friendly competition between classrooms at the Elementary School.  The PTA has earned an average of $5000 per year through Box Tops, Milk Points, and Labels.  This money is used to help fund programs, activities, items for the classroom, and family events.

Valid entries should be sorted according to the type of entry (Box Tops, Milk Moola, Donuts for Dollars, Kemps, Land o’Lakes, Kids Caps & Cash, Campbell’s Labels) and counted.  Each classroom has a collection bag for student entries.

Entries will be collected every month for a different challenge:  heaviest, highest number of Box Tops, highest number of Milk Moola, and random drawing.  PLUS, the highest grand total for entries at the end of the competition will win a lunch party on the PTA, complete with pizza, subs, chips, dessert, and beverage.

Congratulations to Mrs. Atkins’ homeroom for winning the December challenge of heaviest entry!!  Next month’s challenge is highest number of Box Tops.

Thank you to all the parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles, and family friends who help make this collection so successful every year.  The PTA collects Box Tops, Milk Points, and Labels year round.  Questions about collections can be sent to Jennifer Snowbank, chairperson for Box Tops, Milk Points, and Labels at jsnow@csdmail.com or 715-822-5122 ext. 253.

Elementary Students Pledge to be Drug Free

Cumberland Elementary School students have been celebrating Red Ribbon Week!  Red Ribbon Week is a week dedicated to learning about making healthy choices.  The students learned about why drugs, drinking alcohol, and smoking are dangerous and addicting.  They have participated in special dress up days, had classroom lessons and were given the opportunity to sign a pledge poster, which means they made a promise not to use drugs.  We all learned a lot and had fun too!

Show and Tell a Highlight in First Grade!

Children in Mrs. Lynch's class have assigned days for Show and Tell. So far this year they have had chickens, cats and puppies visit the classroom, have viewed a Romanian flag, and conversed with trucker Tim Rye as they looked at his semi-truck and trailer. Can't wait to see what is next!

New Staff welcomed to Cumberland Elementary

There are many new faces working in the Cumberland School District, and the Elementary school is excited to welcome several new staff members, all of whom have valuable teaching experience.

Mrs. Kelli Torrison – Grade 1 Teacher
Mrs. Kelli Torrison was born and raised in Grand Meadow, Minnesota.  She has two younger brothers who both work in the computer science field; one in Rochester, Minnesota and the other in the Washington D.C. area.  Her mother is a fourth grade teacher in Grand Meadow and her father works for Olmsted County, Minnesota.

Mrs. Torrison has always wanted to be a teacher and loves the journey of learning.  She started her teaching career after graduating from Winona State University with a Bachelor of Science degree in Elementary Education. Along with starting her teaching career after college, she married her husband, Eric.  Mr. Torrison works for Fastenal and shares a love for the outdoors with his wife.  “When I’m not teaching I enjoy reading, photography, the outdoors, and spending time with my family and friends,” said Mrs. Torrison.
This is Mrs. Torrison’s first year teaching for the Cumberland School District.  For the past two years she taught kindergarten for the School District of Flambeau.  “I really enjoy working with young children and am very excited to teach first grade this year,” she said.  Mrs. Torrison also added how fortunate she feels to be working for such a wonderful district.  She looks forward to meeting students, parents, and community members and is eager to become involved in this great community.

Miss Casey Rohl – Grade 1 Teacher
Casey Rohl grew up right here in our very own, Cumberland, WI. She graduated from Cumberland in 2003 and the University of Wiconsin – Eau Claire in 2008. Her family is full of educators who have instilled within her a love of life long learning. Some of you may have even had her parents as teachers here in Cumberland. Casey’s experiences include: student teaching in Barron, long-term subbing in Rice Lake in first, second, and third grade and last year she was back in Cumberland at the Early Learning Center. In addition, Casey has been the Color Guard instructor for the Cumberland High School Marching Band for the past eight years.
In her free time she enjoys anything outdoors: hiking, watersports and four wheeling are just a few. She also enjoys shopping with her sisters and nieces, reading by the lake, and spending time with family and friends. (Especially at the cabin.)
“I am very thankful to be a part of such a great first grade team, a great elementary school, and a great community. I am looking forward to working closely with students, parents, staff and the community. I am eager to see what the 2011-2012 school year has in store.”

Mr. Evan Strangstalien – Special Education Teacher
My name is Evan Strangstalien and I was raised on a dairy farm near LaCrosse, WI and graduated from Westby High School. I received my bachelor’s degree from the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh in Elementary Education and Special Education. I was married this summer and my wife is a 1st grade teacher in Rice Lake.

I am eager to get started this year, my first year in the elementary school. Last year I was special education teacher in the middle school here in Cumberland. This year I will be replacing Mrs. Mysicka in the elementary.
