At Cumberland Middle School, we are proud of what we have to offer, our staff, and our students! With class sizes generally less than 20 students, the experienced teaching staff at CMS is able to provide individual instruction to each student to ensure that they are as successful as they can be. The core teaching staff averages 17.7 years of teaching experience. In addition to this, several staff members have Masters Degrees and many are active as coaches, advisers, and are continually pushing themselves to better educate themselves as teachers so they can best practice the art and science of teaching "in the Middle." CMS recently received its third consecutive "School of Promise" Award from the State of Wisconsin because of the high test scores that their students are achieving. A cutting edge core curriculum, exploratory classes, and great school spirit all combine to make Cumberland Middle School a great place to learn!

Marines and Middle Schoolers help those in need
The second annual Toys for Tots drive at Cumberland Middle School was a success this year! Mrs. Green’s homeroom put out fliers and helped remind students that this season is the perfect time of year to think of those who are less fortunate. The holidays can be a difficult time for those in need, and our 7th and 8th graders made it their mission help.
In addition to giving, the 7th and 8th graders were invited to the toy pick-up performed by local Marines. They gave a presentation about the importance of giving and service. Students were also invited to ask questions relating to the Toys for Tots drive and life in the service. After the ceremony, those who helped with the drive and donated got to have their picture taken with the Marines!
Thanks to all of those who donated this year to our Toys for Tots drive! It was a real success. Special thanks to
Sargent John J. Treslley IV, USMC Recruiter,
PFC Nolan Cain of Hayward,
PFC Daniel Kassera of Elmwood, and
PFC Shawn Wilson of Chippewa Falls
If you would like to volunteer at the toy pick up, there are two opportunities: Saturday, December 17th at the Rice Lake Armory from 12-2 PM and Sunday, December 18th at the Barronett Community Center from 12-2 PM. Volunteers should arrive between 10:30 and 11:00 PM.
Mrs. Modjeski was joined by three of her fifth grade students on Saturday, Dec. 3 to ring the Salvation Army bells at the Cedar Mall in Rice Lake. Mathew, Emilie, and Donna each volunteered part of their Saturday to help with the Salvation Army Red Kettle campaign, which is an American tradition at the holidays that helps millions of Americans in need. Thank you to these students for "Doing the Most Good!"
Fifth Graders Proud of Veterans Wall of Honor
Fifth graders are proud of the “Veterans Wall of Honor” that they created to honor all Veterans on Veterans Day. The activity was based on the picture book The Wall, by Eve Bunting, which tells of a father and his young son who visit the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington, D.C. The boy observes the reactions of the visitors - honor, sadness, and sense of loss. He also notices the small tributes left by visitors at the wall such as flags, pictures, flowers, and teddy bears. Following the story, the students wrote their own tributes to Veterans. Some students brought pictures of their relatives who are Veterans to add to their display, which includes flowers, flags, and other decorations. They were also fortunate to have guests, including relatives who served, attend the Veterans Day Program with them. The “Veterans Wall of Honor” is on display near the fifth grade hallway in the middle school

CMS Sixth Graders Work With Canadian Counterparts on Monster Craze
The 6th graders at CMS have been in a MONSTER CRAZE this past week. Students were given an interactive, hands-on assignment of creating a monster in which they then had to write a descriptive essay so someone else could re-create it. Ms. Swiontek's homeroom was able to participate in a Polycom conference with a 7th grade classroom in Spruce Grove, Alberta, Canada.
Ms. Swiontek's students were able to see their monsters recreated by the students of Spruce Grove. Students learned valuable lessons on how they can improve their descriptive writing in the future. Not only did students learn about their writing skills; they had a lot of fun meeting and learning about their new Canadian friends!
The pictures are CMS students with their monsters as well as the their re-creations that they made from the descriptive wrtings of the Spruce Grove students.

Bittersweet Winds Examines Stereotypes
Richie Plass, a member of the Stockbridge-Munsee Nation, opened an exhibit at the St. Angelo Public Library in downtown Cumberland. Our 7th and 8th graders were fortunate enough to attend a session at the exhibit. Plass began by saying, "I started out my life as a mascot [at Shawano High School]. After I was laughed at, spit on, and had food thrown at me, I spent the rest of my life fighting the use of Native People being used as mascots. I do this with education."
The term Indian is a European term, first used by Columbus who thought he was in Asia. "We didn't call ourselves Indians," Plass said. "We called each other human beings." He gave the students a history of the tribes that are indigenous to Wisconsin and explained that each of the 900 tribes in North America had their own cultures, languages, and terms for each other. Despite that, Native people have been lumped into one general group...Indians. Unlike other cultures, Native people continue to be depicted as mascots.
Plass showed examples of what would happen if teams were called the "Jersey Jews," "N.Y. Negros," "Denver D'egos," etc. It would never happen, yet Native people continue to be caricatured and monikered.
In May of 2010, the State of Wisconsin passed Act 250 which generally states that if a member of a community finds a school's nickname offensive, the school district is ordered to change the name within one year or be fined. Other organizations such as the NCAA have also enacted legislation to prevent the use of stereotypical nicknames with institutions.
Plass had hundreds of artifacts and exhibits showing how Native American repersentations are in every area of marketing, from sports mascots to logos for businesses.
Plass finished his presentation by saying what we all know to be the truth. Our time on earth is short and we are all deserving of respect.
Back at school, students continued the study of stereotypes as it pertains to gender and race. English teacher, Amy Green, designed a lesson that shows how young women and young men are depicted in the media. Social Studies teacher, Joe Waite, taught the historical component of Native American stereotyping. He showed clips of The Lone Ranger, the Tomahawk Chop from various stadiums, and other examples of how Hollywood depicted Native Americans. These depictions are often bought as the truth by our society.
Education is the key to understanding, and understanding is the key to acceptance. Our students were exposed to a different perspective and gained insights into the struggles of Native Americans in American society.
Ipads changing the way students learn
The staff and students in the 7th and 8th grade CMS classrooms are diving right in to the use of Ipads to enhance student learning. An example of this is happening in Joe Waite's 8th grade US History classes. Students are learning about Christopher Columbus and other European explorers that came to the Americas in the late 15th and early 16th centuries.
Columbus is a controversial figure in history. Though he undoubtedly changed the world with his courageous decision to travel westward to find lands that were to the east, native populations throughout the New World suffered greatly because of his actions and the actions of other European explorers.
One way that students expressed their thoughts on Columbus was to produce an "Idea Sketch" using their Ipads. Using this free application, students were able to write statements about Columbus. They used different shapes and colors to assign value statements to the actions and then connect their thoughts using a serious of lines to connect their "bubbles" together.
The next day, students used a spreadsheet using Apple's Numbers application (something that they use in Mike Dietrich's math classes every day) to create a time line and sort explorers by nationality.
With even more applications and apps due to be installed on their Ipads late this week, learning will continue to be enhanced by these and new technologies used by the staff at CMS.

CMS Football Splits With Barron
The 7th grade football team pulled away from Barron in the second half Tuesday night at Moser Field downing the Bears 30-14. Cody Elfers caught a pair of touchdowns including a 12 yard catch from Peyton Rose in the first half which was followed up with a 2 point conversion run in by Isaac Bucher. Peyton Rose recorded the longest play from scrimmage this season when he blistered the Bear’s defense with a 92 yard touchdown run. Cody Elfers second touchdown catch came in the second half from quarterback Isaac Bucher from 38 yards out and Dale Griffith ran in the extra points. Griffith put the game out of reach on a 3 yard touchdown run and Tyler Landsworth ran in the extra points. The Beavers defense held Barron to just one score with their second coming on a kickoff return. Tanner Newville recovered a fumble and was joined in a great defensive effort by Dylan Feiertag, Kevin Johnson, Beau Kyrola, and Casey Sutherland.
The 8th grade team played with heart and determination in a game that featured hard hitting and, unfortunately, injuries. Several players were asked to play new positions to fill out the team. According to coach McCreary, “We learned just how important each member of our team is tonight. Our team showed real character and we are proud of their effort.” The offense gained some traction running the ball with converted tight end Roy Green and quarterback Lucas Graf had some success throwing the ball. Linebacker Tyler Ramelfanger led the hard hitting defense along with Jesus Delgado, Jack Ault, and Nolan Brown. Final score 44-0.

Setter Annie Larson has been consistent from the service line, serving 14 points in a row against the Chetek Monday night. The dependable serving of Hannah Urbanski helped clench the win as well as her many nice digs versus the Bulldogs. Middle hitters Amber Avery and Taylor Breaul talong with outside hitter Brooke Chafer have been strong at the net while the digging skills of Ashlea Burke, Caitlin Weaver, Kalli Relford and Rena Erickson have been crucial to keeping our winning streak going.

7th and 8th Graders Open Season against Unity: Peyton Rose rushes for 3 TDs, Trystan Adams rushes for 100
The 7th & 8th grade football teams played Unity on Tuesday night at Moser Field. The 7th graders pulled out a 20-12 victory overcoming a few turnovers early in the game. Peyton Rose led the way on offense with 3 touchdown runs of 48, 28 and 42 yards putting him well over 100 yards rushing on the night. Dale Griffith also scored a touchdown which was called back, scored an extra point and had a 62 yard run to put the Beavers in scoring position. The defense shut out Unity in the second half with solid play by Rose, Isaac Bucher, Dylan Feiertag, and Bradley Reed. Kevin Johnson and Dale Griffith each had a sack in the game.
The 8th grade team fell short in a 39-22 shootout that saw several big plays by both teams. Trystin Adams went over 100 yards rushing with 3 touchdown runs of 22, 82, and 40 yards. He also added an extra point run and tight end Roy Green scored an extra point catching a pass from Lucas Graf. After Unity scored on an interception and again on a fake punt in the first half Cumberland’s defense stiffened in the second half thanks to inspired play by Bret Pecha, Tony Zamora, Cole Sutherland, and Jack Ault. Ethan Roeschlein also made a critical interception late in the first half to keep the Beavers in the game.
Students in Joe Waite's homeroom assembled protective devices on their Ipads this morning.
It Feels Like Christmas Day at CMS!
7th and 8th graders received their District provided Ipads in their homeroom classes this morning. With every high schooler being provided with their own laptops, the Middle Schoolers are excited that they too are in on the technological action as CSD students prepare themselves for the 21st Century.
The only ones that might be more excited than the students are the staff. "I have so many ideas for labs and research that I will use this year with my students," said science teacher Tirzah Zipperer. Social Studies teacher Joe Waite will have the students jump right in with their Ipads as well. He writes all of his own text, so instead of photocopying the text for the students, he has converted his texts into Ibooks which the students will be able to download off wiki.csdmail.com. "It's the way of the future," he said. "The students will be able to access all in the information they need while they are here and be able to take it home with them, whether they have internet access at home or not."
Math teacher Mike Dietrich has already put his graphing calculators away and will be using Ipad apps to teach and reinforce the concepts he teaches in his class. Language Arts teacher Amy Green has big plans for reading Ibooks and writing using the Ipads. "It's going to be so motivating for the students," she said.
The 7th and 8th grade staff are excited to use these new eductional tools as our students leap forward and get the skills they will need to excel in the new century!
