Baseball Team Opens WIAA Tournaments Against Hurley This Thursday

The Cumberland Beavers will have a home game this Thursday, May 29, when the Hurley Midgets come to town for a 5:00 pm D3 WAA Regional contest at Islander Park. Hurley is 9 and 7 and the Beavers 6 and 16 as of play on Monday, with one game left on their regular season schedules. The winner of the match-up will advance to a second-round game in Spooner on Tuesday, June 3.

The Beavers played their regular season finale in Barron on Tuesday before Thursday’s Tournament opener. Barron came into the contest at 16 and 6 and in second-place in the HON behind 2025 Champion, Spooner.

The Beavers ran into some good pitching last week as they dropped three games on the road, losing 3-1 to Ladysmith and 8-7 and 7-1 to the Chetek-Weyerhaeuser Bulldogs.

In the Ladysmith loss, Lumberjack Senior Jaxen Donahue proved too tough on the mound, holding the Beavers to a single run on six hits, while striking out 11 batters. Cumberland Senior Uriah Johnson pitched well himself in the loss, striking out eight hitters and scattering seven hits.

Cumberland Freshman Tucker Wickstrom continued his outstanding season at the plate with a pair of safeties in three at-bats for Coach John Peterson.

On Friday, the Beavers came close to winning the opener when they broke a 6-6 tie with a run in the top of the seventh to go up 7-6. Following singles by Max Peterson and Gabe Graf, a walk to Troy Majewski loaded the bases with two outs. Cooper Schramski then drew another walk to force in the Beavers go-ahead tally.

Unfortunately, the Bulldogs scored two of their own in the bottom of the inning to take a walk-off victory. A hit-by-pitch, an error, and three hits keyed the Chetek-Weyerhaeuser rally.

Max Peterson had a big day at the plate or the Beavers with four hits, while Gabe Graf was two for four and Cooper Schramski doubled and stole three bases.

The nightcap was dominated by the pitching of the Bulldog’s Connor Evich, who held Cumberland to a single unearned run while going the distance on the mound and striking out five. Schramski took the pitching loss for the Beavers, while Sloan McCreary had two Cumberland hits.
