Cross Country Team Runs in Phillips Sectional; Dettinger Earns Second State Trip

Cumberland Senior Tommy Dettinger is headed back to the State Cross Country Meet after finishing 2nd at the Phillips D3 Sectional held last Saturday. Coach Wilber Rosenow praised the senior for his consistent performances throughout the year and his strong time of 16:54.9 in Phillips.

Dettinger finished six seconds behind the boy’s winner, Senior Gavin Esterholm of Phillips, who ran a 16:48.9 to pace the 108 runners. The Cumberland Senior enters the State Meet with the 20th fastest Sectional time run by a D3 entrant. The fastest was a 15:35.5 by Luke Eden of Stevens Point Pacelli, this Saturday’s favorite to take home the D3 State Championship.

Cumberland Junior Jayden Eagleman was the next best Cumberland runner, finishing 29th in 19:15, while Sophomore Ben Dettinger was 31st in 19:21.5 and Tyler Genatempo 62nd with a time of 20:59.

Team wise, the Cumberland Boy’s Team took 7th in the field of 20 teams. Prentice/Rib Lake took first, Phillips 2nd, and Luck/Frederic 3rd.

The Cumberland Girl’s Team also finished 7th overall out of 18 teams and 87 runners. Cumberland Freshman Jovina Skinner concluded her strong freshman season, by taking 16th place with a time of 22:17, her personal best. Taking first in the Sectional was Senior Leah Harper of Phillips, who ran a 19:50.

Other Cumberland runners competing in Phillips included Violet Small who was 45thin 25:03, Levke Wacker, who was 49th in 25:57, and Greta Weaver, who was 55th in 26:35. All four of these runners will return to next year’s team.

Coach Rosenow said, “This season was a tremendous step forward for both programs. From the leadership of our upperclassmen to the promise of our younger runners, the future of Cumberland cross country looks very bright. I couldn’t be prouder of how this group represented our school and community this fall—with toughness, teamwork, and heart in every race. I know Tommy is proud to represent this team down at State this Saturday.

Dettinger will head back to Wisconsin Rapids for his second State Meet this Saturday, November 1, with the D3 race starting at noon at the Ridges Golf Course. Last fall, Dettinger finished in 21st place in his first State Trip with a time of 16:59.5.
