Cumberland Cross Country Team Opens Season in Grantsburg

The Cumberland Cross Country Team traveled to Grantsburg last Thursday, August 28, where they participated in the Sherstad Memorial Invitational. Six Varsity teams took part in the run, with the Cumberland Girl’s squad finishing fifth, while the Boy’s Team did not have enough runners to compete in the Team competition. Spooner took first in the girl’s race, while Frederic/Luck was boy’s champion.

Cumberland Freshman Jovina Skinner was the story for the girl’s team as she finished 10th in her first varsity race. Skinner ran a 25:11, while Junior Violet Small ran a 25:52 to finish 13th. Junior Greta Weaver had he next best run for Coach Wilbur Rosenow with a run of 29:08. Frederic/Luck Freshman Lola Morley won the race with a time of 21:29.

For the boy’s Team. Tommy Dettinger picked up where he left off last year by finishing third overall with a time of 17:14. Brother Ben Dettinger added a 14th place finish with a run of 19:13, while Tyler Genatempo added a 40th place finish with a time of 23:17. The first place medal was won by Unity Junior Oliver Gariepy, with a time of 16:55.

Cumberland’s Cross Country team is back in action on September 4, when they head to Spooner.
