Football Team Defeats Spooner; Homecoming This Week

The Cumberland Beavers Football Team traveled to Spooner last Friday night and came away with a 14-6 victory over the Rails, grabbing their first win of the 2025 season. The Beavers will try to make it two in a row this Friday night when they host St. Croix Falls for the annual Homecoming game in Endeavor Stadium beginning at 7:00 pm.

The Beavers showed true grit and determination in the pulling out the victory, creating four Spooner turnovers along the way. After giving up a touchdown in their first defensive series, they responded with a great team effort to shut out their opponent over the game’s final 40 minutes.

“After the initial turnover, we didn’t quit and came right back and scored. We still need to clean up our mistakes, but we feel like we are playing better and improving day by day and week to week,” said Coach Jordan Potvin about his team’s play.

The Beavers did much of their offensive damage on the ground during the night rushing for 160 yards on 47 attempts. Mitchell Monchilovich continued his fine play with 89 yards in 20 carries while Logan Peterson added 60 yards in 18 carries and Troy Majewski 14 yards in eight attempts. Peterson and Majewski scored the teams two touchdowns, while Majewski hit Max Odden for the team’s successful two-point conversion.

Passing proved more difficult, with Majewski finishing three for eight for 36 yards. Max Peterson led the Beavers receivers with a 19-yard catch.

Defensively, Max Odden had a big night with 11 tackles, while Brody Gilbertson had 9.5 tackles, including two quarterback sacks. Logan Peterson added six tackles and Billy Williams another sack of the Spooner QB. Alex LaBlanc, meanwhile, picked off a Spooner pass.

After showing improvement over the last two weeks, the Beavers hope to use their new-found momentum to grab a win over St. Croix Falls. The Saints are currently 4 and 2 overall. “They are always tough, but we’re looking forward to the challenge,” added Coach Potvin.
