Girl’s Golf Team Plays in Superior and Spooner

The Cumberland Girl’s Golf Team had two meets last week, first traveling to Superior on Wednesday to take on Spooner and Superior, before heading north to Spooner last Thursday, where they took on Northwestern and the host Rails. Cumberland is back in action this Thursday, when they take on multiple schools in a home match beginning at 4:00 pm and are then off until Tuesday, September 9, when they head to Grantsburg.

A strong Spooner team breezed to victories in both matches last week.

On Wednesday in Superior, Spooner led the way with a team score of 170 to defeat a Superior team who shot 183 and Cumberland, who came in with a 237. Senior Layla Thompson led the Rails with a 39, which was good for Medalist honors. Cumberland Junior Bella Neitzel was the Beavers top golfer with a 47, good for 7th best score of the afternoon. Makenzie Tahtinen came in next with a 55,

Thompson was even better on her home course last Thursday, when she shot a 39 to lead Spooner to another victory with a team score of 169. Northwestern was second with a 195 and Cumberland was third with a 223.

Tahtinen led Jess Olson’s golfers with a 53, while Neitzel was a stroke behind with a 54. Brook Colburn added a 58 for the Beavers.

Cumberland is an inexperienced team after the first three golfers, but Coach Olson credited those golfers with showing, “A lot of improvement and working hard to improve.”
