Softball Team Defeats Unity Eagles in WIAA Tournament Opener
The Cumberland Softball Team used a 12-run third inning to easily cruise to a 16-4 victory over the Unity Eagles in their D3 WIAA Tournament opener held last Thursday at Islander Park. This sent the 13 and 14 Beavers to Northwestern on Tuesday for a second-round contest against the 18 and 3 Tigers. A victory there would lead to a Regional Championship berth on Thursday, May 29, likely against the Spooner Rails in Spooner.
Morgan Monchilovich was dominate in gaining the pitching victory, as she threw four scoreless innings, while striking out five. Jayme Bayerle finished up the final frame.
The hitting was outstanding throughout the line-up and included home runs by Avery Johnson and Monchilovich. Macy Beecroft and Presli Butzler had three hits each, while Raegan Beecroft and Monchilovich added two more with Monchilovich also enjoying five RBIs.
It was a great night to start WIAA Tournament action in front of a nice Cumberland crowd.
The Beavers also finished up their regular season last week, dropping an 8-1 decision to the Barron Bears. The Beavers finish up HON play in 7th place with a Conference record of 7 and 11. Northwestern and Spooner share the 2025 HON Softball Championship.
The Beavers could only muster four hits in the Barron loss, one which was a triple by Baleigh Stouffer, who also stole a pair of bases for Coach Olson. She is not only a clutch hitter, but has served as a strong defensive presence in the Cumberland line-up as the team’s catcher. Monchilovich took the pitching loss, allowing five hits and walking seven Bear hitters.
