HON Holds Conference Track Meet; Sectional qualifiers to Colby on Friday

The HON held its annual Conference Meet in Cameron on Friday, May 22, with Hayward capturing both the Boy’s and Girl’s Titles. Cumberland teams finished 8th in the 10-team field in both competitions.

Next up for the Beavers was the WIAA Regional Meet that was held Tuesday in Webster, with teams and individuals that qualify heading to Colby this Friday for the D3 Sectional that will determine the State field.

The best finish for Cumberland in Cameron was a second place by Tommy Dettinger in the 3200-meter run with a time of 10:19. Gavin Stewart of Ladysmith took home the event title from a group of 10 runners with a 9:47.

The Beavers added a third from the Boy’s 4x200m relay team comprised of Chayden Berghammer, Jack Owens, Onesimus West, and Evan Hornstein, whose 136:48 came behind the Ladysmith winning run of 132:06. Hornstein also recorded a fourth in the 100-meter dash with a 11.86, won by Randy Goyke of Ashland with a time of 11.33.

The best finish by a Cumberland female athlete was a fifth from Senior Mya Anderson, who threw the discus 85-4. Her excellent all-around day saw her add a sixth in the shot put at 28.475 and an eighth in the triple jump with a leap of 28.85.

Charlotte Odden, meanwhile, finished sixth in the discus at 83-2 feet, Sara Roff finished seventh in the shot put at 28.1 feet, and Mya Gardner finished seventh in the pole vault at 8-6.

For the boys, Onesimus West ran a 24.40 to take fifth in the 200m dash, the 4x800m Relay team finished fifth in the eight-team field with runners Ashton Brannan, Tommy Dettinger, Ben Dettinger, and Nick Wells, while Brody Gilbertson was sixth in the discus with a throw of 101-1 feet.

Cumberland also sent a large number of runners to the HON JV Meet held earlier in the week.

Taking first in their events were Kennedy Campbell, who won the Girl’s 200-meter dash with a time of 30.08, Kiera Fox, who won both the 100-meter hurdles with a run of 19.92 and the 300-meter hurdles with a time of 1:01.51, Lauren McCreary, who won the discus at 99.6 feet, and both the 4x100 and 4x200m relay teams. It was a strong performance by the team’s younger ladies for Coach Ryan O’Connell and the other coaches.

For the JV boy’s, Carson Catlin took first in the 200-meter dash with a 25.21, Austin Hornstein won the high jump at 4-8, Yuan Miguel Adadilla took first in the triple jump at 33 feet, and Mitchell Monchilovich won the pole vault at 10-0.

The JV relay teams, meanwhile, dominated their portion of the day winning the 4x100, 4x200, and 4x800 events. In the 4x800, Ben Dettinger, Alex LaBlanc, Nick Wells, and Austin Hornstein broke the previous Freshman record with a time of 9:43, breaking the old mark by nearly 30 seconds. Again, the JV meet showed the development of the Cumberland younger track participants.

“It has been an enjoyable season with our athletes and we are looking forward to the WIAA Tournaments as we expect more great efforts from our track team,” concluded Coach O’Connell.
