Baseball Team Runs into HON’s Best; Drops Four Games
The Cumberland Baseball Team came up a little short against some of the HON’s best last week, dropping games to 9 and 2 Barron, 7 and 4 Hayward, and a doubleheader to 7 and 4 St. Croix Falls. The team hopes to jump back into the winner’s bracket this week, with Monday and Tuesday contests against Ladysmith and Northwestern and a 3:00 doubleheader at Islander Park this Friday, against the 1 and 8 Cameron Comets.
The week began with a 12-3 loss on Monday, May 5, against a strong Barron Team. The Bears only led 3-2 after four innings, before seven runs in their last three at-bats, broke open the contest.
Uriah Johnson took the pitching loss, but had two of the Beavers five hits in the game. Calvin Cunningham added a pair of RBI’s with a two-run double.
Cumberland responded with a good effort at Hayward the following night, before dropping an 8-6 contest. Unfortunately, four Cumberland errors led to six unearned runs and the eventual loss.
Cumberland outhit the Hurricanes 14 to six in the game, led by three from Tucker Wickstom and two each from Cooper Schramski, Sloan McCreary, Landon Wickstrom, Gabe Graf, and Uriah Johnson. It would not prove enough offense, however, to avoid the loss.
The Beavers finished the week with a pair of losses to St. Croix Falls on Friday night, falling 3-0 and 17-1.
Cooper Schramski pitched well in the opening game 3-0 loss. The senior gave up only six hits, while striking out eight Saint hitters. Unfortunately, the Beavers could only manage three safeties in the game and could not dent the scoreboard. They included singles by Tucker Wickstrom, Uriah Johnson, and Schramski. The second game loss ended the week with the Beavers record standing at 3 and 11.
