Baseball Team Falls to Spooner on Seventh Inning Walk-Off
The Cumberland Beavers came close to knocking off the #2 seeded Spooner Rails in last Wednesday’s WIAA Regional, but instead saw their season end on a seventh inning walk-off single breaking a 2-2 tie and sending Spooner into the Regional final.
Cumberland took an early lead in the contest on a Uriah Johnson single, knocking in Cooper Schramski who had walked. It stayed that way until Spooner answered with two runs in the second to take a 2-1 lead.
The Beavers responded in the fourth with their own second run when Tanner Wickstrom’s groundout scored Johnson, who had walked. A subsequent double by Landon Wickstrom put Cumberland runners on 2nd and 3rd with only one out, but the Beavers could not convert with a go-ahead tally.
The game would stay tied until the seventh when two Spooner hits and a pair of Cumberland errors ended the contest and sent the Rails into the Regional final the following day. There, they defeated Northwestern 8-6 to advance to next week’s Sectional in Augusta, where they will meet the Barron Bears.
It was a good effort by the Beavers against a team that won the HON Title and currently have a record of 20 and 7. Cumberland finishes their season with a final record of 8 and 17, but played their best ball at the end of the year.
Coper Schramski pitched the first five and two-thirds innings for Coach John Peterson, giving up two runs on four hits, while striking out seven. Sloan McCreary came into the contest to get the sixth innings final out and ended up taking the pitching loss.
Six different players had hits for the Beavers with Wickstrom’s double the only extra base hit.
