Cumberland’s College Athletes Finding Success

Several former Cumberland Athletes are finding success at their respective colleges. Among them are senior football players Jack Martens (South Dakota) and DaShaun Ames (UM-Duluth) who are wrapping up their careers this fall.

Martens is serving as a Captain for the 5 and 4 Coyotes and has caught 14 balls for 246 yards and two touchdowns as a starting wide receiver. They have three games left on their schedule beginning this Saturday against North Dakota.

Ames missed three games with injury for the 7 and 1 Bulldogs, but his return has UM-D excited for the rest of the season. He showed why last Saturday with three catches and a touchdown in their victory. They hope for more of the same this Saturday against the University of Jamestown.

A third former Beaver, Gavin Jarchow, led his Morehead State Dragons team in tackles last week in an exciting 49-48 loss to Northern State University. Jarchow, a junior eligibility wise, was second in the team in tackles last year from his defensive back position.

In Cross Country, meanwhile, Carly McCreary and her UW-Stevens Point team runs in the WIAC Conference Tournament this Saturday in Oshkosh.

Finally, in basketball, Freshman Gavin Gores continues to play well and push for time on the Wyoming Cowboys squad, who defeated the University of Idaho 111-63 in their final exhibition game. Gores play included a pair of dunks as the team prepares for the start of their season on November 3 against Northern State.
