Cross Country Team Readies for an Exciting Season Ahead
The Cumberland High School boys’ and girls’ cross country teams are gearing up for what promises to be an exciting and competitive season, with several experienced runners and some talented newcomers out for the team.
The girls team is the largest to participate in the sport in several years. “This is a clear sign of growth and momentum for our program. We return four key contributors from last year in Juniors Greta Weaver, and Jasmine Delgado and Sophomores Avery Johnson and Caylin Schultz. They will be joined by ten newcomers, giving the team depth and fresh energy. Among them, junior Violet Smalls, a standout from the track season, is expected to be a strong contributor,” said Head Coach Wilbur Rosenow.
He added, “Freshman Jovina Skinner, had a successful Middle School experience and also looks to make an immediate impact. After a year of team-building last season, the girls are ready to step back into conference competition with confidence and determination.”
The boy’s top returner is Senior Tommy Dettinger, who finished as a top-21 State Competitor last year. Rosenow added, “Expectations are high for Tommy to continue his run as one of the top three runners in the HON, while he will be closely followed by his brother, Ben Dettinger and three experienced juniors: Bryce McNulty, Tyler Genatempo, and Jayden Eagleman. With the addition of a couple of promising newcomers, the boys are well-positioned to be highly competitive in the conference this season.”
The team is eager to improve on last season’s 7th place finish for the boy’s and 9th place finish for the girl’s in the HON. Their first competition is this Thursday, August 28, when they run in Grantsburg at 4:30 pm. Next Thursday, September 4, they will run in Spooner, also at 4:30.
