Football Team Loses to Northwestern; At Spooner This Friday Night

The Cumberland Football Team ran into a big and talented Northwestern Tigers last Friday night, losing 48-8 to the undefeated Tigers. Despite the loss, Coach Jordan Potvin saw some progress in his team, saying “The score may seem lopsided, but we actually played better than in the last couple of weeks. We didn’t turn the ball over and found the end zone for the first time in three weeks. They are a good football team, but the boys didn’t give up and we can build off of this game.”

The Beavers kept the game close for much of the first half, but saw the Tigers score three times in the final five minutes of the second quarter to build their lead to 33-0 at halftime.

The Beavers got the first score after intermission on a short run by Logan Peterson, followed by a successful conversion pass from Troy Majewski to Max Odden to make the score 33-8. The Tigers rebounded, however, to score the game’s final 15 points.

Northwestern received huge games from quarterback Kamden Kroll, running back Tyson Teal, and wide receiver Ethan Harms. Harms caught six passes from Kroll for 160 yards and four touchdowns. Teal, meanwhile, rushed 11 times for 177 yards and three scores. The Tigers have now outscored their opponents 156-29 in their five victories.

For the Beavers, running back Logan Peterson picked up 82 yards in 20 attempts with some hard running against Northwestern’s big defensive front. Mitchell Monchilovich also had a nice game for Coach Potvin, rushing for 61 yards in 14 attempts, while catching three balls for 18 yards.

Majewski completed five of 11 passes for 41 yards with Max Peterson catching one pass for 19 yards.

Defensively, Odden led the Beavers with 7 ½ tackles, while Monchilovich had seven tackles, Peterson 5 ½ and Brody Gilbertson five. Carson Catlin added a nice night of punting, averaging 39.2 yards on five kicks.

This Friday, the Beavers head to Spooner to take on the 1 and 3 Spooner Rails, who were defeated by St. Croix Falls, 36-0, last weekend. “A great week of practice and a continuation of confidence from our effort against Northwestern could provide us with better results this Friday,” concluded Coach Potvin.
