Cross Country Season Ends in Sectionals
The Cumberland Cross Country Season came to an end last Saturday at the D3 Sectional at Solon Springs. There, Phillips and Chequamegon advanced to the Girl’s State Tournament, while the Boy’s team qualifiers were Solon Springs/Northwood and Phillips. The Cumberland Girl’s squad finished sixth out of 10 teams and the boy’s ninth out of 13. Unfortunately, none of the Cumberland runners qualified to advance to Wisconsin Rapids.
The closest Cumberland runner to make a State trip was Senior Andie Otto, who came up less than a second from securing a spot. The School record holder ran a 21:00 to finish in 10th overall but heartbreakingly just short of advancing.
Teammate and 2022 State participant Carly McCreary was also close, finishing in 12th with a 21:06. She also broke the previous School Record during the regular season. Freshman Greta Weaver was the third Cumberland finisher with a 24:47 and Jasmine Woodley next at 24:48.
Leading the way in the 77-person field was Senior Autumn Michalski of Chequamegon, who took Medalist honors with a time of 17:45.
The boy’s were led by Solon Springs Junior, Isaac Dickenson, who ran a 16:16. Cumberland’s top time came from Sophomore Tommy Dettinger, who finished 18th with a run of 17:41. Cumberland School Record holder Josh Swint finished 22nd with a time of 17:51, while Junior Ashton Brannan finished 53rd in the 100-person field with a 19:29.
Qualifiers will head to Wisconsin Rapids next Saturday for the State Championships. Cumberland will lose four seniors off this year’s girls team, while the boys lose two seniors. Among those in their final year are Otto, McCreary, and Swint, who each set School records during this fall’s competition.
