Softball Team Falls to Talented Pitching in Pair of Losses
The Cumberland Softball Team dropped a 9-1 decision to Northwestern and a 9-7 contest to Barron last week, as pitching was the difference maker in the two outcomes. “Northwestern has the best pitcher in the HON and Barron’s pitcher was also very good,” said Head Coach Jessica Olson about the two losses. The two girls combined to strikeout 28 Cumberland hitters over the two contests.
Cumberland could only manage two hits, from Jayme Bayerle and Kelsey Reidy, in the loss to the Tigers. “We couldn’t put anything together offensively,” said Coach Olson. Morgan Monchilovich took the pitching loss, striking out eight batters, while walking eight and allowing seven hits.
Friday’s loss to Barron came in cold, snowy weather. The Red and White was ahead 5-4 after five innings, but saw Barron rally with a five-run sixth to secure the comeback win. “Barron used a strong bunting game, something we weren’t able to execute, during their victory,” concluded Coach Olson.
Cumberland received hits from six different players in the loss, including two safeties from Kaelee McLemore and a triple from Baleigh Stouffer. Macy Beecroft, meanwhile, had a single and two stolen bases during the game. Unfortunately, 15 strikeouts by Cumberland hitters helped lead to the close 9-7 defeat.
A two-game Tournament scheduled in Boyceville last Saturday was postponed due to the weather.
The team was back in action against Chetek-Weyerhaeuser and Ashland on Monday and Tuesday and are scheduled to play a doubleheader in Spooner this Friday, beginning at 4:00 pm.
