Baseball Team Drops Two; Upsets St. Croix Falls
Outside of a Hayward Team that is 11-1 in Conference play, the HON baseball teams continue to provide a very balanced group of competitors, who provide entertaining baseball each and every game played. Seven of the league teams have six or more wins, as they beat up on each other, while providing close exciting contests.
This was the case last week, as the Cumberland Beavers dropped an 8-2 contest to Hayward, before losing 7-6 to Ashland and then upsetting the St. Croix Falls Saints on Friday in St. Croix Falls, by a 5-3 score. The Beavers record stands at 9 and 7 overall, as they played Ladysmith on Monday, Northwestern on Tuesday, and then end the week with a doubleheader in Cameron this Saturday, beginning at 11:00 am.
Hayward put their game against the Beavers away last Tuesday with a five-run third inning. They used four pitchers in the contest, while knocking out 11 hits and taking advantage of four Cumberland errors.
The Beavers also used four pitchers, with Gavin Prinsen taking the loss. Cumberland could only manage two hits in the game, one each from Troy Majewski and Nathan Schmidt.
On Wednesday, the Beavers dropped a tough 7-6 decision to the visiting Ashland Oredockers, who scored the winning run in the seventh inning to break a 6-6 tie. Uriah Johnson took the hard luck pitching loss, despite giving up only one earned run in 4.1 innings of work.
Ryan Lundmark and Nathan Schmidt each had two safeties for the Beavers, while Landon Wickstrom had a double and Gavin Prinsen a triple. Wickstom’s two-run safety had tied the game at 6-6 in the fifth inning.
Things got better on Friday, when the Beavers used six strong pitching innings from Junior pitcher Cooper Schramski to take the 5-3 road victory against the Saints. Gavin Prinsen came into the game in the seventh to pick up the save.
Prinsen also had a big offensive game, scoring three of the Beaver’s five runs, while knocking out a pair of singles. Sloan McCreary, meanwhile, had three hits for Coach John Peterson, while Troy Majewski was on three times with a single and a pair of walks.
Coach Peterson added, “The victory had the feel of a playoff contest,” and credited Landon Wickstrom’s play at third base a big part of the win.
