Soccer Season Ends in Sectionals
A record-setting Cumberland Soccer season came to an end last week, with a 2-0 loss to Washburn/Bayfield in a WIAA D4 Sectional contest in Washburn. Washburn/Bayfield then defeated Arcadia 3 to 1 on Saturday, to move on to this week’s State Tournament where they meet St. Mary’s Catholic in a State Semifinal this Saturday at 4:00 pm.
“We played well, but struggled in muddy and slippery field conditions in Washburn. Both their goals came in the first half and we could not catch-up. I am extremely proud of what the team achieved this year, even if it ended sooner than I would have liked. Our seniors put everything they had into this season and it showed. Some of the records set this year include the most wins, fewest losses, most shutouts, fewest goals allowed, most points scored, and most points scored by a single player,” said Head Coach David Stone.
Three of Cumberland’s four losses on the season came to Washburn/Bayfield and Somerset, who both won trips to the State Tournament. The Beavers finish the season with a record of 15-4-1.
