Track Team Runs in Barron and Bloomer; Conference Meet Next Tuesday
The Cumberland Track Team will continue their season this week as the team moves towards the HON Conference Meet next Tuesday in Spooner. Prior to that time, the Beavers travel to Maple this Thursday for a meet against the Northwestern Tigers. WIAA Regionals are less than two weeks away, when Cumberland heads to Webster on May 20.
Last week Cumberland ran on Monday in Barron and then traveled to Bloomer on Tuesday for the Dave Landgraf Invitational.
The five-team HON Meet in Barron was a big success, as both Cumberland teams took first in a field that included Ashland, Hayward, Ladysmith, and Barron.
Among those taking firsts for Coach Ryan O’Connell included another outstanding showing from Senior Andie Otto who won the 200-meter dash (27.84), 400-meter dash (1:04), 100-meter hurdles (16:33), and long jump (15-6). “Andie had another incredible night at the track,” said O’Connell.
Other first place finishes came from Josh Swint in the 800-meter run (2:21), Jacob Schradle in the 110-hurdles (20.25), Jack Owens in the pole vault (10-6), and Ben Cunningham in the discus, with a throw of 130-9 feet. These were all strong showings,” added O’Connell. Owens, who just started pole vaulting this year, continues to improve his jumps.
Among those taking second place finishes were Ryker Allen in the shot (40-7), Tommy Dettinger in the 1600 (5:16) and 800 (2:23), Onesimus West in the 400 (59:05), Chayden Berghammer in the 200-meter dash (25:39), Evan Hornstein in the 100 (11;89), Mya Anderson in the triple jump (27-4), Greta Weaver in the 1600-meter run (6:58), Carly McCreary in the 800 (2:53), and Anna Kruft in the 400 (1:09) and 100-meter dash with a 14.64. It was a strong showing by the entire team.
It is hard to run back-to back, as the Beavers headed to Bloomer the following night to participate in a strong 16 team field in the Blackhawks annual Invitational.
Cumberland’s best performance on the night was a second-place finish by Andie Otto in the 100-meter hurdles (16.43), when she finished just behind Mondovi’s Ava Gray, who won with a time of 16.34. Otto added a third in the long jump (16-11) and seventh in the 300-meter hurdles (49.91), for another strong night.
The Boy’s 4x200 meter relay team took third with a time of 1:38, while Chayden Berghammer took only seventh in the long jump, despite a strong leap of 19-8. Grand Mueller of Elk Mound took first by jumping 20-10, with seven jumpers separated by 14 inches.
Next Tuesday’s HON Meet will begin at 3:00 pm in Spooner. “We are working to peak as a team and as individuals as we ready to the HON and WIAA Regionals,” Concluded Coach O’Connell.
